Thousands gather in Harrisburg for Pa. ‘March for Life

One of the largest gatherings of people at the Pennsylvania Capitol in recent years is happening Monday, as thousands converge to celebrate the overturning of Roe v. Wade and to call for policies that impose restrictions on abortion.

The second annual Pennsylvania March for Life drew people from all across the state who filled the area around a stage at the bottom of the Capitol’s front steps for a rally, where they are scheduled to hear from advocates who share their view that life begins at the moment of conception and deserves protection.

Among the speakers scheduled to address the crowd, along with state legislative leaders, were Ann McElhinney, producer and co-writer of the film “Gosnell — The Untold Story of America’s Biggest Serial Killer” and author of the corresponding book and Jeanne Mancini, president of the national March for Life.

Also scheduled to speak were Dr. Monique Ruberu, an obstetrician; former U.S. Senate candidate Kathy Barnette; Amy Scheuring, executive director of Women’s Choice Network; and the Most Reverend Nelson J. Pérez, Archbishop of Philadelphia.

The March for Life, partnered with the Pennsylvania Family Institute, host the Pennsylvania March for Life, held at the state Capitol in Harrisburg, September 19, 2022.

Attendees were scheduled to march around the Capitol following the rally, hosted by the conservative-leaning Pennsylvania Family Institute of Harrisburg.

At the same time they gathered outside the Capitol, a band of House Democrats held a news conference inside the building to announce the introduction of a package of reproduction rights bills and to assert that abortion is part of women’s health care.

Pennsylvania remains a state where most abortions are still legal up until the 24th week of pregnancy. Meanwhile, other states are passing laws or implementing restrictions or complete bans on abortion in the post-Roe v. Wade era where the legality of abortion is left up to each state.

That U.S. Supreme Court ruling has thrust abortion into the spotlight in the races for Pennsylvania’s open U.S. Senate seat and governorship and raised the volume of the rallying cries of advocates on both sides of this hot-button issue.
