Eyes fixed on severe risk Sunday ahead of week of warming

TONIGHT: Overcast, Stray Storm. Lo 70. Winds S 0-5 mph.

SUNDAY: Scattered Severe T-Storms, Warm & Humid. Hi 84. Winds S 0-5 mph.

MONDAY: AM Storms, Some Strong. Hi 88. Lo 68.

Things are beginning to look even better in terms of air quality. As some scattered shower and storm activity makes it's way into our neck of the woods, some of us are getting the effects of some localized cleaning. Expect more widespread improvements to occur of the course of Sunday into Monday. Lows drop into the 70s overnight amid cloudy skies and continued chances for scattered showers and storms throughout the night.

The big question some of us might be asking is when the smoke is ACTUALLY going to be out of here. While Saturday was certainly a day for more acute cleanings, the shift in upper level winds from northwesterly to westerly heading into Sunday will play a big role in clearing out the smoke. Additionally, we cannot discount the effect of any stronger storms that make an appearance with Sunday's severe weather risk. In terms of timing the latest models put scattered shower and storm activity in the daytime, with the strongest of storms arriving overnight Sunday into Monday. Hazards will mostly consist of strong winds, heavy downpours, with a few storms producing hail. We will continue to update you on the upcoming severe weather situation as it evolves.

If you don't like the weather this holiday weekend we've got good and not so good news for you. Rain chances Sunday and Monday are likely the last until at least next Friday. Movement of an upper-level ridge over the Northeast in the coming days will dry out the air a bit and allow sunshine and warmer temperatures to prevail. The big win for most will be the nicer weather on Independence Day, as highs climb into the upper 80s amid drier sunnier conditions, perfect BBQ and firework weather in my opinion. The downside comes over the following days, as highs continue to warm up to 90 and then into the low 90s for what may be our first heat wave of the summer. Looking way ahead there are early indicators of a potential rain chance next Friday that could offer some relief, however in the meantime enjoy the pool weather!
